Biography

Louis Alphonse de Brebisson was born into the family of a famous entomologist on September 25, 1798 in the municipality of Fales . From childhood, he was interested in entomology and mineralogy, but soon switched to the study of orchid and secretive plants.

From 1826 to 1839, Brebisson produced a series of exsikates of bryophytes of Normandy flora. Brebisson was probably the only Frenchman of his time to study diatoms and desmidia algae. He also published several publications on orchids and mosses.

In addition to studying botany, Brebisson was a famous photographer. He published a book on photography techniques and equipment selection.

Alphonse de Brebisson passed away on April 26, 1872 .

Louis Alphonse was a member of the Linnaean Normandy Society. Brebisson's main herbarium is kept at the University of Caen (CN). Diatoms are shared between the Paris Museum of Natural History (PC) and the Henri van Hörk Museum in Antwerp (AWH).
