Ust-Alekseevsky district was formed in April 18, 1924 as part of the North Dvina province. On February 27, 1928, the Ust-Alekseyevsky District was abolished, and its territory was annexed to Velikoustyugsky District .
Secondly, the Ust-Alekseevsky district was formed on January 25, 1935 as part of the Northern Territory. In December 1936, it became part of the Northern Region. September 23, 1937 Ust-Alekseevsky district was included in the Vologda region.
According to the data of 1945, the Ust-Alekseevsky district was divided into 9 village councils: Verkhne-Varzhensky, Verkhne-Shardengsky, Viktorovsky, Lipovsky, Nizhne-Varzhensky, Nizhne-Yugsky, Oryol, Teplogorsk and Shassky.
In 1959, the Ust-Alekseevsky district was again abolished. Its territory went to the Veliky Ustyug district.
