Biography

He graduated from high school in Mitava in 1901 and the law faculty of Novorossiysk University in Odessa in 1907. Returning to his homeland, he joined the Lithuanian Democratic Party , which defended the interests of the small peasantry, collaborated in the newspapers Lietuvos ūkininkas and Lietuvos Žinios . After the outbreak of World War I, he was evacuated to Voronezh , where in 1917, together with other representatives of the right wing of the party, he created the Lithuanian Socialist Peasant-Democratic Party and was deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of Lithuania in Russia. In 1918 he moved to his homeland, where on December 26, 1918, after the fall of the first government of the country, headed by Augustinas Voldemaras, he headed a new cabinet (until March 12, 1919), and from April 12 to October 7, 1919 he held this post again. Although Sledzhavichyus rejected the proposals coming from military circles to strengthen his power, he took steps to recruit volunteers for the national armed forces (since the militia was not enough to fight the Polish nationalist groups), as well as an attempt to land reform. During the Polish-Lithuanian war in 1920, Slediavičius took the post of chairman of the Defense Committee.

In 1922, Sledzhavichyus was elected to the Sejm from the Peasant People's Union - laudininkov. On July 15, 1926, he again headed the government of the country, which was overthrown on December 17 of the same year during the coup that brought Antanas Smeton to power. After that, he remained one of the leaders of the opposition to the regime.

He was buried at the Pyatrashunsky cemetery in Kaunas .
