Biography
Received primary education in Samokov , and high school - in Ruse .
In 1897 he entered the Samokov Theological School, which he graduated in 1902.
He left for Russia, where he graduated from the Taurida Theological Seminary , and in the year 1907 - the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with a candidate of theology degree .
On December 6, 1907, Metropolitan Tarnovsky Anfim was tonsured a monk with the name Pavel , and on June 20, 1908, Metropolitan Dorostolsky and Chervensky was ordained to the rank of hieromonk .
After that, the Holy Synod was appointed teacher-educator in the Sofia Theological Seminary of St. John of Rylsky . Then it becomes the protosinkella of the Plovdiv Metropolis , where he served for 8 years.
On December 26, 1913, Metropolitan Maxim was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite .
On December 14, 1917, he was appointed Rector of the Sofia Theological Seminary, which he directed for six academic years, as the Holy Synod.
March 27, 1921 was elevated to the rank of bishop with the title "Dragovitinsky."
On March 23, 1923, the Holy Synod approved Paul as Metropolitan of Starozagorsky .
He was one of the most educated and well-read bishops of the then Bulgarian Church. He left behind many written and translated books. Of interest are his diaries, which reflect his vision of historical events of which he was a contemporary.
Being a member of the small composition of the Holy Synod, together with other bishops, he blessed the marriage of Tsar Boris III and John of Savoy , which took place on October 31, 1930 in the cathedral church of St. Alexander Nevsky .
He died on October 5, 1940 .
