Biography

Augusta Klumpke studied at the medical faculty of the University of Paris , the only faculty in France at that time that admitted women, unlike London. In 1885, she applied for internships and received an excellent mark for her written work on the signs and causes of organic hemiplegia . But for the oral examination, the commission did not agree to give her an average rating. Not giving up, Augusta repeats an attempt to enter next year and succeeds with the support of Paul Bert, Minister of Education and ardent advocate of women's emancipation. In 1886, she became the first female intern in the hospital in Paris.

She attended lectures on histology of Professor Ranvier at the College de France , which later helped her in the study of neuropathology. On Sundays in the morning, she assisted at Charcot's lectures at Salpetriere Hospital . During an internship with Professor Ardi at the Charite Hospital in Paris, her supervisor was Jules Degerin, who became her husband in 1888.

To complete her education, Jules Degerin takes her to the laboratory of Professor Alfred Vulpian . In 1889, she defended a dissertation entitled " Polyneuritis in general, paralysis and atrophy caused by saturnism in particular."

Following her husband, becoming a professor of neurology, she leaves the Bicetre hospital and returns to Salpetriere in 1895. She made a significant contribution to the writing of works published jointly with her husband - "Anatomy of the nervous system " (1895) and " Semiotics of diseases of the nervous system" (1914). Being an elected member of the Society of Neurology in 1901, in 1914-1915 she was elected its chairman. At the same time, during World War I, she served 300 beds for the wounded in Salpetriere. Augusta worked on injuries and injuries of large nerve trunks (jointly with Mouzon) and spinal cord injuries (with Landau and Jumentier).

In 1906 she was awarded a medal for courage for saving a girl who rushed to the Seine, pulling her ashore. In 1913 he became a knight of the Legion of Honor , and in 1921 - an officer of this order.

Augusta Dejerine-Klumpke survived her husband, who died in 1917, for ten years. With the help of her daughter and son-in-law, she devoted these ten years to rebuilding her old laboratory and library to create a museum dedicated to the scientific activities of the Dejerine spouses.

Died November 5, 1927 in Paris. She was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery next to her husband (plot 28).
