MS-74 ( M modernized S niper factory number 74 ) is a Soviet sniper rifle developed by E.F. Dragunov in 1949 at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant . The weapon was created on the basis of a three - line Mosin rifle chambered for 7.62 × 54 mm R. The main objectives of the development were to increase accuracy, improve ergonomics and ease of loading. It successfully passed the tests, was recommended for implementation and was produced in limited series.
