Origin

Gaius Atilius belonged to a plebeian clan originating from Campania [1] . Atilia Serrana in the 3rd century BC e. separated from Atiliev Regulov [2] . At first, the cognran Serran was associated with the name of the city of Sarran in Umbria , but later it was rethought as a sower ( Serranus ) [3] .

In the Capitoline fasts , information was not preserved about what preferences the father and grandfather Gaius Atilia wore [4] .

Biography

Gaius Atilius is first mentioned in surviving sources in connection with the events of 106 BC. e. Nevertheless, the researcher Robert Broughton suggested that, given the requirements of the law of Willius , which established the time intervals between the magistrates , Serran should have been no later than 109 BC. e. hold the position of praetor [5] . In 106 BC e. Guy Atilius became consul along with patrician Quintus Servilius Cepion [6] . The latter ran with his brother-in-law Quintus Lutazi Katul , but Serran gained more votes, and for Katul this was the first of three defeats in a row [7] . Guy's victory was not prevented even by the fact that this candidate was considered a very stupid person [8] .

Almost nothing is known about the activities of Serran as consul [6] . Ancient authors note that it was under the consuls Serran and Cepion that people belonging to the number of the greatest Romans were born - Mark Tullius Cicero and Gnei Pompey the Great [9] [10] . The next mention of Gaia Atilia dates back to December 100 BC. e., when a decisive battle took place between supporters of the popular Lucius Appuleius Saturnin and the Senate "party": Serran, among other nobles, appeared at the Sank temple to get weapons from the state vault [11] .

Many researchers identify with the consul 106 BC. e. mentioned by Appian Atilius Serran [8] . This is a senator who died at the end of 87 BC. e. after the capture of Rome by the troops of Gaius Maria and Lucius Cornelius Zinn ; the killers overtook him on the road [12] . In historiography, there are various hypotheses about the reasons for this end. Ernst Badian suggested that Guy Atilius was a friend of Guy Maria, and later went over to the side of his opponents; Michael Bulst - that Serran took some kind of hostile actions towards Zinn in the beginning of 87 BC. e. Arthur Kivni states that there are no reliable arguments in favor of any of these hypotheses, so the reasons for the killing of Serran by Marians or Cinnans remain unknown [13] .
