Content
History
York was founded in 1741 by natives of Philadelphia , and is named after the eponymous English city . At the end of the XVIII century, almost all the townspeople were of German or Irish descent.
In 1777-1778, the Second Continental Congress was hosted in York, which actually made the city the capital of the United States (the name "United States of America" was first used in official documents as the name of the new state during the Congress in York). Conway Cabal conspiracy (Eng. Conway Cabal ), aimed at the removal of George Washington from the post of commander in chief of the separatist army, originated in York, in the existing to this day (in the form of a museum) tavern "Golden Plow".
From 1800 to 1840, York was one of the 100 largest cities in the United States, although it was at the end of the list. During the Civil War , the city housed a large military hospital for northerners . York became the largest of the northern cities occupied by the Confederates during the war. According to the US Census Bureau , in 2012, the population of York was 43,550 people [1] . York is a center of agglomeration with a population of about 230 thousand inhabitants.
