The .45 Schofield or .45 Smith & Wesson is a revolving cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson for the S&W Model 3 Rifle Revolver. The characteristics are similar to the .45 Colt cartridge , but it has a slightly shorter sleeve, due to these reasons it can be used in many revolvers under .45 Colt (but not vice versa). Also known as .45 S&W / .45 S&W Schofield / .45 M1877 ball revolver .

History
Initially equipped with black powder . It has become the standard patron of the US Armed Forces due to compatibility with the Colt 45 and the fact that revolvers for it have less impact than the Colt 45 . The further need for unification of ammunition led to the appearance of the cartridge M1887 Military Ball , which was suitable for revolvers of both systems.
