The German Alpine Union ( German: Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV ) is the largest mountaineering organization in the world and the eighth largest sports organization in Germany . The union includes 354 legally independent mountaineering associations, clubs, bringing together a total of about 988,000 members [1] . The Union unites both professionals and amateurs involved in mountain sports: mountaineering , climbing , mountain hiking , ice climbing , ski mountaineering , mountain biking , etc.
The Union is part of the Olympic Sports Confederation of Germany .
Content
History
The organization was founded on May 6, 1869 in Munich . After 10 months, it already had 22 sections, in which there were 1,070 members. In 1876, there were already 500 sections and 1876 members. From 1873 to 1938, two branches operated within the union: German and Austrian, and the club was called the German-Austrian Mountaineering Club ( German: Deutschen und Österreichischen Alpenverein (DuÖAV) ).
After Austria joined Germany in 1938, DuÖAV was renamed Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV) under the leadership of prominent Nazi leader Arthur Seyss-Inquart , later executed as a war criminal by the decision of the Nürnberg Tribunal , and included as a mountaineering unit of the National Socialist organization for physical culture Third Reich (Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen). After World War II, DAV was dissolved by a decision of the Allied authorities, the victors in World War II. The property of the organization was transferred to the Austrian Alpine Club in trust.
The German Alpine Club was revived in 1952. In 1992, he joined the Olympic Sports Confederation of Germany .
Structure
The German Alpine Union is currently an organization uniting 354 independent sports clubs of various types in mountain sports. The governing bodies are the general meeting, the office of the union and the presidium.

Activity
The main task of the Club is the maintenance of mountain huts and shelters. Currently, DAV has 322 mountain huts and shelters. These mountain huts and shelters provide an opportunity to use them when traveling in the mountains and climbing to the summits for both members and other tourists. In some shelters only members of the union can stay. In addition, there are 180 icebreakers [1] .
DAV publishes guides and maps, organizes various tours, provides rental climbing equipment.
Recently, a direction aimed at preserving nature in the Alps has been developed.
