Origin

Guy Atilius belonged to a plebeian clan, descended from Campania and was in alliance with the patrician clan Fabiyev [1] . According to Zonare , Serran was the brother of Marc Atilius Regulus , who died in captivity in Carthage [2] ; but of the latter, Capitoline fasts are called the son of Mark, grandson of Lucius [3] , while Guy Atilius was the son of Mark, the grandson of Mark [4] [5] .

Guy Atilius was the first carrier of his clan Serran [6] . At first, this cognomen was associated with the name of the city of Sarran in Umbria , but later it was rethought as a sower ( Serranus ) [7] . There is a story that the ambassadors of the Senate, who had arrived to inform Guy Atilie about his election as consul , found him on the field, scattering seeds [8] [9] [10] .

Biography

The first mention of Guy Atilius in extant sources refer to 257 BC. Oe. when he became a consul [5] . His colleague was Patrician Gnei Cornelius Blasion [11] . At this time, there was the first war of Rome against Carthage , and Regulus Serran led the fleet in this war. A sea battle took place near the town of Tyndarida on the northern coast of Sicily : Guy Atilius attacked the enemy when he sailed past without any visible order. The Carthaginians in time noticed the impending danger, rebuilt and defeated the Roman advance guard, so that the consular ship was forced to flee. This was followed by a battle between the main forces, in which the preponderance was on the side of the Romans. As a result, both sides attributed the victory to themselves [12] [13] .

Orosius reports of a certain Attilius , who “ravaged” Liparu and Melita [14] . Presumably it is about Regula Serran and the campaign of 257 BC. er Upon his return to Rome, Guy Attili was awarded the triumph for his successes [15] .

In 250 BC. er Regul Serran received the second consulate; his colleague was the patrician Lucius Manlius Wulson Long . The consuls landed with the army in Sicily and besieged Lilybey - one of the last strongholds of the Carthaginians on this island. The city defended very energetically; despite the blockade, the Carthaginian squadron with a 10-thousandth corps was able to break into the harbor. In the ensuing large-scale battle under the city walls, neither side was able to gain an advantage, but the Carthaginians still retreated. Later, taking advantage of the weather, the besieged burned out the siege vehicles of the Romans, so that Wulson and Regulus had to abandon attempts to take the city by storm. The siege of Lilibey continued even after the expiration of their term [15] [16] .

After 250 BC. er Guy Atilius is no longer mentioned in the sources [15] .
