Biography
Born in Holstein-Glukstadt . He studied at the University of Kiel , then at the University of Bonn , where he wrote his doctoral dissertation. Returning in 1859 Kiel he defended her. In 1862, Petersen was habilitated at the University of Erlangen and received the title of privat-docent.
In 1873, he was appointed professor of ancient classical philology and archeology at the University of Dorpat . In 1879, he replaced Otto Benndorf , becoming a professor of archeology at the University of Prague .
In the years 1882-1885, together with Benndorf, Lushan , Lyantskoronsky and others, he participated in archaeological research in Asia Minor. In 1886 he was elected secretary of the German Archaeological Institute and in the following year he replaced Gentzen at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome.
