Biography
Mikhail Marchuk was born on November 23, 1906 in the village of Srostki (now the Biysky District of the Altai Territory ). After completing six classes of school, he worked in the parental economy. In 1928 - 1930 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army , participated in the battles on the CER . Demobilized, he graduated from the courses of tractor drivers, he worked at the motor depot in Biysk . In June 1941, Marchuk was again drafted into the army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. In May 1944 he graduated from the Pushkin Tank School [1] .
By October 1944, Lieutenant Mikhail Marchuk commanded the T-34-85 tank of the 203rd tank battalion of the 89th tank brigade of the 1st tank corps of the 2nd guards army of the 1st Baltic front . He participated in battles in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR . On the night of October 5-6, 1944, two tanks, one of which was commanded by Marchuk, with a landing force on armor, broke through into the enemy rear near the city of Kelme and captured an important bridge over the river Kražante . The engineers cleared the bridge, after which the group successfully repulsed German counterattacks for twelve hours [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, for “courage and heroism shown during the liberation of the Baltic states,” Lieutenant Mikhail Marchuk was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
In January 1945, in the battles he was seriously wounded. In 1946, Marchuk was dismissed. Lived and worked in Stavropol . He died on October 23, 1971, and was buried in the Sazhevoe cemetery of Stavropol [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
