Saanich ( Saanich , Saan. SENĆOŦEN sonchasyn ) is a dialect of the North Straits language spoken by Canadian Saanich Indians living on the northern coast of the Washington Olympic Peninsula in the USA, as well as on the Gulf and San Juan Islands , in the south of Vancouver Island and the southern edge Lower Mainland , British Columbia , Canada. Saanich is also a dialectic continuum called the North Straits . Varieties of northern straits are closely related to the Clallam language.

The Saanich alphabet was created by Dave Elliott in 1978. It uses only capital letters , with one exception: the letter s , which is used as the possessive suffix of a third party.

Normal and glottalized sonoromas do not differ.
The vowel [ e ] is written as Á if it is next to the post-velar ones [[ k̠ k̠ ʷ k̠ʼ k̠ʼ ʷ x̠ x̠ ʷ ŋ̠ ŋ̠ ʷ ]) it is written as A.
