Northern Straits ( Northern Straits, Northern Straits Salish, Straits ) is an almost extinct Salish language that is spoken on the southeastern peak of Vancouver Island, British Columbia in Canada, as well as inside south of the San Juan Islands (Lummy and Samish dialects) Washington State to USA. It has several dialects:
- Lummi ( Xwlemiʼchosen, xʷləmiʔčósən [hulymychosyn]) (†)
- Saanich ( SENĆOŦEN, sənčáθən, sénəčqən [son of a chapyn])
- Samish ( Siʔneməš [Sinemysh])
- Semiahmu ( Tah-tu-lo ) (†)
- Tsuke or bitch ( Tʼsou-ke, c̓awk ) (†)
- Songis ( Lək̓ʷəŋín̓əŋ or Lekwungen ), three people (2011)
