History
In 1921, during the construction of the highway from Tiberias towards Zemakh, the remains of the destroyed synagogue were discovered. During archaeological excavations, on the top of the hill, the remains of three synagogues were found. The first synagogue was built around 230 CE. and destroyed in the III century . On the ruins of the first synagogue, a second synagogue was also built in the area of the III century . This synagogue lasted at least until the 4th century , and was probably reconstructed after the earthquake that occurred in the Tiberias region in 306.
The second synagogue was destroyed by an earthquake at the beginning of the 5th century . The third synagogue built then was much larger; it had a large hall, divided into three parts by two rows of columns. This synagogue worked until the middle of the VIII century .
The national park also includes 17 hot healing springs, united by the name "Khamei-Tiberias". Water springs rises from a depth of 2 kilometers and has a temperature of about 60 degrees. The water contains bromine, potassium, sodium and calcium chlorides, and sulfur.
Modernity
On the night of May 28-29, 2012, vandalous acts were committed in the Hamat Gader synagogue - part of the synagogue was painted with graffiti and part of the mosaic was destroyed. [2] Mosaic was restored in 2013 and now in the synagogue there is no trace of this vandalism. [3]
