Original words and melody songs written by John Wetton . He intended to make it the title track of the previous album - Starless and Bible Black . But Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford did not rate the song and the instrumental track was recorded as the title track. Later, the authors returned to work on Starless, the words were changed, and a lengthy instrumental fragment based on a bruford riff was added. The band performed Starless at concerts from March to June 1974. During the recording of the Red album, the text was again changed, this time with the participation of Richard Palmer-James . The introductory theme, originally performed by David Cross , moved from his violin to Fripp's guitar, undergoing minor changes. Since the title “Starless and Bible Black” has already been used, the name of the composition has been reduced to one word.
