History
Under the Liang Empire, these lands were part of Shining county (始 宁县). Under the empire of Northern Wei, Fuyang county (符 阳县) was formed, while under the Western Wei empire, Shoshui (诺 水 县) and Baishi counties (白石 县) were separated from Shining county.
When the Sui Empire in 583, the Zhoshui County was annexed to the Shining County.
When the Tang Empire in 620, Shinui County was again allocated from Shinin County, and Guanna County (广纳 县) was formed on part of the lands of Shining and Guirin counties (归仁). In 624, the Zhoshui County was again attached to the Shinin County, but in 625 it was re-allocated. In 735, Taiping County (образов 县) was formed. In 742, Zhoshui County was renamed Tongjiang, and Taiping County was called Dunba (东巴 县).
Under the Sung Empire in 966, Dunba County was annexed to Tongjiang County, and in 967 Guangn County was annexed to Tongjiang County. In 1072, Fuyang and Baishi counties were annexed to Tongjiang County. At the end of the Song Dynasty, Tongjiang County was divided into Shantunjiang (上 通 江 县) and Siatunjiang (下 通 江 县) counties.
When the Yuan Empire in 1283, Shantongjiang and Siatunjiang counties were annexed to Zenkou County (曾 口 县). In 1344, Tongjiang County was re-allocated.
In the 1920–1930s, these lands became part of the Sichuan-Shensiysk Soviet District, and the counties of Chibei (赤 北 北), Chijiang (赤 江 县) and Hongjiang (红 江 县), as well as special areas were formed on the territory of Tongjiang County Gutsaba (苦 草坝 特别 区) and Hongkou (洪 口 特别 区). In 1935, the Kuomintang authorities reestablished Tongjiang County.
In 1950, these lands became part of the Dasyan Special District (区 专区). In 1970, the special area of Dasyan was renamed into the District of Dasyan (达县). In 1993, by a resolution of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the Dasyan District was renamed Dachuan District (达川 地区), and the Bazhong District (中 地区) was separated from it, which included the Tongjiang, Nanjiang, Bazhong and Pingchang counties.
In 2000, by the decision of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Bazhzhun District was transformed into a city district.
