Biography
Alexander Zhizhilenko was born on November 3, 1823, by poor noblemen. After the early death of his father, he was given up for education at the Gatchina Orphan Institute . Then in 1844 he entered the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy (IMHA) in the city of St. Petersburg [1] .
In 1849, Zhizhilenko began serving as a doctor at the Nadezhdinsky obstetric institution at the St. Petersburg Orphanage , devoting himself to helping future mothers and women in childbirth, until his death in 1889.
In addition to medical work, in 1861 he published the “Guide for first aid in various accidents before the arrival of a doctor” , published a number of articles in the Military Medical Journal , Other Health , and other periodicals. In 1874, Zhizhilenko published The Guide to Obstetrics, an excellent textbook for midwives that has survived several editions.
Since 1870, he became a teacher and head of the school of rural midwives at the Maternity Hospital.
A. Zhizhilenko - landscape painter , author of genre paintings. Since 1865, annually exhibited paintings at the Academic Exhibition. Already in 1867 for the landscapes “The ruins of a Greek temple at sunset”, “Tony on the seaside near St. Petersburg in the moonlight”, “Morning in Nizhny Novgorod”, “Winter evening from the environs of St. Petersburg”, the Imperial Academy of Arts awarded him for outstanding services in the field of art the title of his honorary free community .
More than 10 years after this, Zhizhilenko presented paintings at academic exhibitions almost annually. For the most part - the views of the St. Petersburg province , Finland , Crimea , and other places in Russia.
In 1874, A. Zhizhilenko was awarded a silver medal at the next academic exhibition for his paintings “Morning”, “Evening” and “View of Kiev”.
Alexander Ivanovich Zhizhilenko died on January 3, 1889 from a pyemia - purulent poisoning that occurred from an abscess that opened inside. He was buried in Gatchina at the Smolensk cemetery near the Trinity Church.
