Astakhov, Victor Ivanovich

In 1939, Astakhov entered the Moscow Fur Institute , and in 1940 transferred to the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and Art. In 1941, he volunteered to join the Red Army . During the Second World War, he fought on the Far Eastern Front ^[1] .

After the war, he continued his studies at the Faculty of History (1946 - 1950) and at the graduate school of Kharkov State University . In 1953 he defended his thesis “Student movement at Kharkov University on the eve of and during the First Russian Revolution (1895 - 1907)” (KSU, supervisor - professor A.G. Slyusarsky) ^[1] .

Educational and scientific activities

From 1955 to 1959, he was an assistant professor at the Department of History of the USSR and Ukrainian SSR. In 1956 he led one of the first virgin student units of Kharkov. In 1959 - 1961 - Secretary of the Kharkov Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine . Since 1963 - Vice Rector of KSU. He defended his doctoral dissertation in the monograph “Russian historiography of the second half of the 19th century” (KSU, 1963). Created and headed the first in Ukraine and one of the first in higher educational institutions of the USSR department of historiography, auxiliary historical disciplines and methods of history (1964 - 1972). He taught general courses: history of the USSR, historiography of the history of the USSR, source study of the history of the USSR, special courses.

The author of more than 100 scientific papers. Under his scientific supervision, 2 PhD theses were defended ^[1] .

He was a member of the editorial board of “Scientific Notes” (“Proceedings of the History Department of KSU”), “Bulletin of Kharkov University” (series “History”), and the republican interdepartmental scientific collection “Nutrition of Historical People of the SRSR”.

He was awarded the Honorary Badge of the Komsomol Central Committee "For the development of new lands" , the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1967).

He died on June 22, 1972, was buried in the 2nd city cemetery of Kharkov ^[1] .

Since 1992, at the Faculty of History of VN Karazin KhNU, an international scientific conference - “ Astakhov Readings ” ^{[2] has} been held every two years.

Conference materials are published in a specialized publication - “ Kharkov Historiographical Collection ” ^[2] .
