The population of the city is about 26,000 people. The city houses the scientific museum of water Hidrodoe and a large chocolate factory. There are also several historic buildings, including the town hall and the ancient city gates.

Railway station on the line Antwerp - Lear - Herentals - Mol - Hasselt / Weert. Also, the city is connected to Lira and other surrounding settlements by a network of highways.
