Biography

Representative of a large and influential Chandarly family. The son of the great vizier Chandarly Ibrahim Pasha the Elder (1421-1429).

In 1439, the Turkish Sultan Murad II appointed Chandarli Khalil Pasha as the new Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. In 1444, Khalil Pasha participated in the defeat of the army of the Crusaders in the battle of Varna . In the same 1444, Sultan Murad II voluntarily renounced the throne in favor of his young son Mehmed II , while he retired from the capital Manisa , where he was engaged in religion and art. Murad II ordered his great vizier Chandarly Khalil Pasha to stay with his son in Edirne .

The great vizier, Chandarly Khalil Pasha, dissatisfied with the appointment of Sultan Mehmed , for the following months sent letters to the former sultan asking him to return to power, informing him that Mehmed was too young and inexperienced in the role of ruler of the empire. After climbing to the throne, Mehmed II made a rash decision about the siege and storming of Constantinople, however, Chandarly Khalil Pasha managed to dissuade him from this intention, after which he reported everything to his father Murad. In September 1446, Murad II returned from Manisa to Edirne , where he re-entered the sultan's throne. Grand Vizier Chandarly Khalil Pasha convinced Mehmed to abdicate in favor of his father. After the abdication of power, Prince Mehmed was sent to the vicegerent in Manisa .

In 1451, after the death of Sultan Murad II, his son Mehmed II Fatih ( 1451 - 1481 ) entered the Ottoman throne. The new Sultan, despite a strong distrust and prejudice towards Chandarly Khalil Pasha, retained the position of great vizier for his father’s old adviser. According to the Greek historian Duke, Khalil’s feelings towards Mehmed II Fatih were similar. Duca describes the great vizier as a friend of the Byzantines, but he is not ready for bribes. He cites the words of Khalil, who called Mehmed II arrogant, quick-tempered and wild, in comparison with the late Murad II , who was a sincere man with a clear conscience.

In 1453, the great vizier Chandarly Khalil Pasha, together with the viziers Zaganos Pasha and Saruja Pasha, took part in the siege and capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman army, led by Sultan Mehmed II Fatih . Ottoman troops laid siege to the Byzantine capital, but the siege was delayed. On May 26, at the military council, Grand Vizier Chandarly Khalil Pasha spoke in favor of lifting the siege of Constantinople. But Sultan Mehmed II himself and the "war party" headed by the second vizier Zaganos Pasha spoke out sharply against this. Military operations against the Byzantines were continued. May 29, 1453 Constantinople was taken by storm.

On May 30, 1453, by order of Sultan Mehmed Fatih, the Grand Vizier Chandarly Khalil Pasha was arrested on charges of treason, first detained in his tent, then transported to Edirne and in August (according to other data - in July) of the same year was hanged . Zaganos Pasha was appointed new grand vizier ( 1453-1456 ).
