History

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the band’s leader, was born in May Pen’s Clarendon Ward in Jamaica. He was the youngest among seven children. As a child, he sang gospel in a church choir, but in 1961 , at the age of sixteen, he moved to Kingston . Here Hibberdt met Henry Gordon (Henry "Raleigh" Gordon) and Nathaniel "Jerry" McCarthy and created a group.

Changing the name to “The Maytals”, the trio recorded their first album, “Never Grow Old - presenting the Maytals” for Clement “Coxsone” Dodd with Studio One in 1962-1963 [2] .
