Biography
He studied at Uppsala University , in 1886 received a doctorate. In 1890 he was invited to the post of conservative at the Bergen Museum, where in 1907 he headed the department of zoology. In 1910 he returned back to Sweden to his native university, where he became a professor of anatomy. A generous donation from the consul Robert Bünsov allowed him to build a biological station on the west coast of Sweden in the town of Fiskebäckskil . From this station, the transformation of marine biology at Uppsala University into a scientific discipline began.
In his study, Appellöf focused on embryonic development of invertebrates. He discovered patterns in the lobster life cycle that were important to the fishing industry. In 1919 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
