History
In 1528 - 1529, there was a site with a house on this place, which belonged to the sub-commissar Potsevich. In the middle of the XVIII century, the new owner Krempush built a stone two-story house here.
In 1798, the Counts of Choiseulles bought it; upon their request, the building was reconstructed, as expected, by the architect Martin Knuckfus . [one]
At the beginning of the 19th century , the palace had 16 large and 12 small rooms, 9 furnaces, and a stable for 16 horses. The owners of the palace in the XIX century were the Counts de Reus, later Plater , the doctor and traveler Ignace Tadeusz Jagel and other changing owners.
In the first quarter of the 19th century, the architect Joseph Poussier prepared a reconstruction project, which included the construction of a new building with the same portico as the eastern building. The project remained unfulfilled. [3] [4]
In 1892 - 1901 the building belonged to O. Bogdanovich. By his order, in 1894, the western building of the palace was erected on the site of outbuildings [3] .
Architecture
The palace is located in the northern part of S. Daukanto Square , forming a composite counterweight to the presidential palace . Three two-story buildings surround a partially enclosed courtyard. The facades of the eastern and shorter western buildings overlook the square; the eastern building with an expressive facade is located at the northeast corner of the square, at Universiteto Street. The walls are made of bricks and covered with plaster. The stepped roof is tiled.
The expressive facade of the eastern building is an important accent of the square. Massive entablature and pediment of the majestic portico above the baroque roof. The rhythm of four ionic columns is repeated by pilasters of the same order. [one]
Other facades of simple and strict forms. The windows of the western building are decorated with neoclassicist frames with trapezoidal keys.
