Biography

Mikhail Martynov was born on November 18, 1909 in the village of 2nd Yelshanka (now the Buzuluk district of the Orenburg region ). He graduated from five classes of the school and Saransk concurrent school. In June 1930, Martynov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In June 1930, he graduated from the Volskaya United Military Aviation School for Pilots and Aviation Technicians, in 1933 - the Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School of Pilots, and in 1936 - courses for flight commanders. He participated in the Polish campaign [1] .

He participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war, being the squadron commander of the 48th high-speed bomber regiment of the 18th high-speed bomber aviation brigade of the 7th Army of the North-Western Front. During the war he flew 46 sorties to bombard accumulations of Finnish military equipment and manpower. On February 2, 1940, during a sortie, Martynov’s plane was shot down, but the pilot continued to carry out the mission, and only after its completion flew to the nearest airfield and landed [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 21, 1940 “for courage and heroism shown in battles,” Captain Mikhail Martynov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .

He participated in the battles of World War II. In July 1944, Martynov graduated from advanced training courses for officers, in 1951 - the Military Academy of the General Staff. He served in senior positions in the Air Force of the USSR. In March 1970, with the rank of lieutenant general, Martynov was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Moscow . He died on June 26, 1986, was buried at the Kuntsevsky cemetery in Moscow [1] .
