Description
The subfamily includes trees , shrubs , creepers , a few grassy plants . Many species have white milky juice, less often reddish or yellowish. The leaves are arranged alternately, opposite or spiral along the stem.
Flowers are usually with a wheel - shaped rim , occasionally with a bell-shaped tube. Stamens shorter than corolla tube. Nectaries around the base of the ovary or absent.
The fruit is cracking or non-cracking; the pericarp is fleshy or dry. Seeds are naked or winged, smooth, hairy, pitted or warty, with smooth endospermia.
