Franz Josef Land (reserve)

The reserve “Franz Josef Land” is the abolished state nature reserve of federal subordination, which was located on the islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago. Administratively refers to the territory of the Primorsky district of the Arkhangelsk region . It was created on April 23, 1994 [1] .

The total area of ​​the specially protected natural area is 4,200,000.0 hectares, the area of ​​the marine specially protected water area is 2,600,000.0 hectares.

The purpose of the reserve: the preservation and maintenance of ecological balance, the reproduction of natural resources, the preservation of natural complexes in the natural state, first of all - the places of occurrence in the den of polar bears, walrus rookeries, bird bazaars, white gull colonies, common eider, wormwood areas that are feeding grounds pinnipeds, cetaceans and polar bears, as well as feeding places for seabirds; preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

Protection of the territory of the state natural reserve of federal significance “Franz Josef Land”, as well as measures to preserve biological diversity and maintain protected natural complexes in their natural state on the territory of this reserve were carried out by the Russian Arctic National Park.

By the Decree No. 840 of August 25, 2016, the Government of the Russian Federation liquidated the reserve “Franz Josef Land”. Part of the territory of the abolished reserve was included in the national park "Russian Arctic" [2] , and part of the reserve with an area of ​​more than four million hectares was not included in the national park "Russian Arctic." Huge areas of the sea (habitats of the bowhead whale, narwhal, beluga whales) have lost any protective status, and on this territory oil and marine bioresources production on an industrial scale became possible [3] .

On the islands of Alexander, Graham Bell, Heiss, Rudolph and Hooker islands, in the places of settlements, there are economic zones within a radius of 30 km from the centers of the settlements

Zapazayny polynyas, non-freezing lakes, supporting geological sections, untouched areas with developed land cover, seabird colonies, rookeries of the Atlantic walrus and a number of others are among the most valuable natural objects of the reserve.
