History

The ancestor of the Howards family tradition brings Hereward Wake - the leader of the Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman conquest of England in 1066-1070.

The early Howard genealogy is quite controversial. They come from Leicestershire . The first reliably known representative of the genus is Sir William Howard of Wigenhall (d. 1308), who was the chief judge and was a member of the House of Commons in 1295. His son, Sir John Howard of Wigenhall (d. 1331), was the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk . He married Joanna, daughter of Richard of Cornwall, illegitimate son of the Roman King Richard of Cornwall . One of his descendants, Sir Robert Howard of Stoke Neyland, married Margaret Mowbray, the eldest daughter of Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk . Thanks to this marriage, their son John Howard , 1st Baron Howard, who faithfully served King Edward IV and facilitated the ascension to the English throne of Richard III in 1483, received the title of Duke of Norfolk, vacant after the Mowbray family was extinct (June 28, honor of the two hundredth anniversary of the barony of Mowbray , to whom he was a senior co-heir) and the hereditary position of Earl Marshal of England .

John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, died at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. The new king Henry VII declared all who participated in the battle traitors, on the basis of which the possessions and titles of the Howards were confiscated. Thomas Howard , son of the 1st Duke, who received the title of Earl of Surrey in 1483, was captured at the same battle at Bosworth and spent 3 years in prison. He was allowed to retain the title of Earl of Surrey. Only after the death of Henry VII did his heir Henry VIII in 1513 return to Thomas Howard the title of Duke of Norfolk.

The daughter of Thomas Howard, Elizabeth was the mother of Anna Boleyn , the second wife of King Henry VIII, and the daughter of Edmund Howard, one of the sons of the 2nd Duke, was Catherine , the fifth wife of Henry VIII. The eldest son and heir of the 2nd Duke, Thomas Howard , 3rd Duke of Norfolk, was a zealous Catholic. He was a prominent figure at the royal court, but after the execution of his niece Catherine Howard, his position shook. His son Henry Howard , Earl of Surrey, was the leader of the Catholic Party and was executed in 1547. Only the death of Henry VIII saved the old duke, his father, from death, he spent 6 years in prison and received freedom only after the accession of Mary I Tudor .

After the death of the 3rd Duke, he was succeeded by his grandson Thomas Howard , 4th Duke of Norfolk. Although he converted to Protestantism after the coronation of Elizabeth I , his 3 wives were Catholic. After the death of his third wife, Thomas planned to marry Mary Stuart , who was imprisoned in England, and raise her to the Scottish throne, but Queen Elizabeth did not approve of his plans. And after the Duke of Norfolk organized 2 conspiracies against the Queen, he was accused of treason and executed in 1572. The title of the Duke of Norfolk was confiscated, but his descendants inherited the title of Count Arundel . Later they received the title of Earl of Norfolk, and in 1660 the title of Duke of Norfolk was revived.

Howards, unlike many other English families, continue to adhere to Catholicism to this day. The genus is highly branched, and representatives of different branches are currently peers of England.

Arundel Castle - the main residence of the Duke of Norfolk

Howard Castle belongs to the youngest branch of the Howard clan.

Currently, there are the following main branches of the genus (in order of genealogical seniority):

  • The Fitzalans-Howards are the descendants of Philip Howard , the 20th Earl of Arundel, the eldest son of Thomas Howard, the 4th Duke of Norfolk. She owns the titles of Earl and Duke of Norfolk, Earl of Arundel and Earl of Surrey, and they also occupy the hereditary position of Earl Marshal of England;
  • The Howard branch of Penrith is the descendants of the younger brother of the 12th Duke of Norfolk . They bear the title of Barons Howard of Penrith ;
  • the Howard branch of Suffolk is the descendants of Thomas Howard , 1st Earl of Suffolk, 2nd son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk. They bear the titles of Earls of Suffolk and Berkshire;
  • the Howard branch of Carlisle is the descendants of Lord William Howard, the 3rd son of the 4th Duke of Norfolk. They bear the title of Earls of Carlyle;
  • the Howard branch of Effingham is the descendants of William Howard , 1st Baron Howard of Effingham, 4th son of Henry Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. They carry the title of Earls of Effingham.

There were also branches:

  • Staffords-Howards are descendants of William Howard , son of Thomas Howard , 21st Earl of Arundel. They wore the titles of Baron and Earl of Stafford. The branch died out in 1762.
