History
Since ancient times, this area was known as Chanting, so when the administration of Wan'an County (万安县) was transferred here under the Eastern Jin Empire in 405, then in 535 the name of the county was changed to Chanting (潺 亭 县). Due to the fact that there were salt mines in the county, in 554 the name of the county was changed to Yanting.
In 1950, the Mianyang Special Region (绵阳 专区) was formed in Sichuan Province, to which, among others, Yanting County was subordinate. In 1970, it was transformed into Mianyang County (绵阳 地区). In 1985, Mianyang County was transformed into Mianyang City District.
