Jane's Walks are annual collective walks [1] [2] [3] [4] organized by volunteers in various cities around the world [5] [6] in memory of activist, urban planning theorist and writer Jane Jacobs . Usually held on the first weekend of May [7] , the day closest to Jacobs' birthday (May 4) [8] [4] [9] .

Principles
Key principles are self-organization and independent choice. Walking is organized by volunteers and is free [10] [11] . The guide does not have to be familiar with the books of Jane Jacobs (first of all, it means "The Death and Life of Big American Cities "), but this is welcome. Any person can join the walks [12] . The main goals are getting to know the neighbors and discussing the issues of building a common urban space [13] . During walks, the townspeople explore the surroundings of their homes, meet neighbors, discuss social issues, issues of architecture and cultural heritage, space planning [9] , walking accessibility and beautification faced by local residents, as well as other topics [14] [15] [8] . Jacobs believed that any initiatives should be based on the real needs of citizens, that success in urban planning and management can be achieved only if they are directed from the bottom up. Participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes and clothes according to the weather, ask more questions to others, communicate more, take pictures, stay in a group in order to hear each other better and not interfere with the passage of other pedestrians, be friendly and try to understand other points of view [16] .
History
Since the first walk on May 5, 2007 [17] [18] [19] in Toronto (where Jane died on April 26, 2006), Jane walks have taken place in many cities around the world [9] [8] . The first walk was a group of friends and colleagues Jane Jacobs [20] (Mary Rowe, Margie Zeidler, Chris Winter, Alan Broadbent and Anne Peters) who wanted to honor her ideas and legacy. They created the Center for the Living City. Jane walks is one of the programs of this organization [21] [22] .
The first walks in Canada faced opposition from the local administration [3] . The organizers used donations and grants from various foundations to organize walks [3] [9] . Currently, Jane walks are offered by the administration of the Canadian city of Thunder Bay as one of the means of crime prevention [23] .
Sometimes organizers of walks are politicians or organizations, for example, such as the West End Museum [24] .
In 2009, more than 10 thousand people took part in Jane's walk in 24 locations across North America, as well as in Mumbai .
In 2011, Jane's first walk in Madrid and St. Petersburg took place [25] [26] . In 2011, the walk was first held in Israel - in the city of Tel Aviv [27] .
In 2012, more than 600 walks were organized in 85 cities located in 19 countries, including 14 walks in 9 cities in Slovenia [6] . In 2012, the event was held in 3 Israeli cities: Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem .
In May 2013 , more than 800 walks were conducted in more than 100 cities from 22 countries around the world [8] [28] .
In May 2014 , walks took place in Volgograd [29] and St. Petersburg [30] .
