Joachim Herrmann ( German: Joachim Herrmann ; December 19, 1932 - February 25, 2010 ) - German historian, archaeologist, specialist in the history of the Baltic Slavs , head of the Central Institute for Old History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Biography
Born December 19, 1932 in Bad Belzig in the miller's family.
He studied from 1951 to 1955 at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a degree in history, archeology, ethnography and geology. In 1958 he defended his thesis on the topic “Before and Early Historical Fortifications of Greater Berlin and the Potsdam Suburbs”. In 1956 he became a scientific assistant at the Institute of Early History of the German Academy of Sciences, in 1960 - a senior lecturer. In December 1965 he received a doctorate in philosophy, defending a dissertation on the subject of “Management, Economics and Public Relations of Slavic Tribes between the Neis and Elba Interfluve”. He conducted important excavations of medieval castles in Kepenik , in Ralswick , Rügen and Mittelmark . [2] [3]
Herrmann's work was highly praised not only in the GDR .
In 1971, Herrmann was awarded the National GDR Prize of the second class, and in 1981 received the honorary title of Hero of Labor .
In 1972, he became a correspondent, and in 1974, a full member of the GDR Academy of Sciences . In 1982 he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute .
In 1985, he became a member of the Bureau of the World Association of Historians, the International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH), and since September 1990, became the only German representative in this organization.
From 1986 to 1990, Herrmann was president of the Urania Scientific Society, and until the fall of the GDR, he was the head of the Historical Society of the GDR .
In 1990, he became a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences , and since 1993 he became secretary of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin , where until 2009 he was responsible for social sciences and humanities.
In 1990 he became an honorary doctor of the University of Athens .
In 2009 he was awarded the Leibniz Scientific Society with the Daniel Ernst Jablonski Medal.
He died of cancer on February 28, 2010.
