History

Belle Époque included: French singer Evelyn Lenton, who performed in the early 1960s under the pseudonym Evie, as well as two backing vocalists . Initially, the group sang along with Jusi Fortes (also known as Judy Lesboa [1] ), a native of Cape Verde , and Marcia Briscoe (also known as Marcia Brisku [1] ), originally from Atlanta , Georgia [2] . However, according to Lenton, over time, "the girls changed due to various circumstances" [2] .

In 1977, the trio reached the pinnacles of the European charts thanks to the re-singing of the song “Black Is Black”, also known as “Disco Sound / Black Is Black”. The intertwined version performed by Belle Epoque reached second place in the British charts (in Los Angeles, eleven years ago, the original song performed by Los Bravos reached a similar place) [3] . In 1978, the song reached number one on the Australian top charts .

In the US, Belle Epoque is better known for the song "Miss Broadway", which reached twenty-sixth place in the US R&B charts and ninety-second place on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same 1978 [1] . In the summer of 1977, “Black Is Black” and “Miss Broadway” reached number twenty-one in the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs [4] .

In the late 1970s, other band hits were released in continental Europe. In 1983, Lenton resumed her solo career, although for the most part she worked as a music producer in the production of remixes of the songs “Black Is Black” and “Miss Broadway” [2] .

Title

In British sources, for example, in David Roberts' book British Hit Singles & Albums , the group was listed under the name "La Belle Epoque". In American sources, for example, in the books of John Whitebourne Hot Dance / Disco 1974-2003 and Top Pop Singles 1955-2002, the group was listed under the name "Belle Epoque". The official website of Evelyn Lenton adheres to the same name. On their debut album , Miss Broadway , released in 1977 on Big Tree Records (BT 76008), the band’s name is “Belle Epoque”, but nonetheless on the cover of the single “Black Is Black” (extended version), the name of the trio is like "La Belle Epoque."
