History
The convent in the name of the Virgin Mary, which was located here earlier, was founded on the initiative of the priest Gottfried Mommertz. The monastery belonged to the Catholic Order of St. Mary's Cellitines in Cologne , specializing in patient care. The foundation stone of the monastery was laid on September 18, 1906 , and the consecration took place on December 8, 1906 . The extension of the building for girls in need of hospital care occurred in 1908/09. The monastery was completely rebuilt into a nursing home in 1928 . In 2010, the nuns left the building and returned to Cologne [1] .
Architecture
The former monastery is a two-story semi-axial brick building. Rizalit facade is decorated with a triangular pediment . Inside the pediment there is a figure of the Virgin made of human growth with the inscription “Mary's Monastery” (Marien Kloster) a little lower. The upper part of the windows is made in the form of light arches . A small temple turret (signature) with a small bell is installed on the central part of the roof ridge . The chapel itself is on the second floor. The rectangular room of the chapel is supported by two columns.
Special Equipment
- The turret serves as a bell tower and weather vane .
- An electron organ is installed in the chapel.
- There are a throne , a guardian (tabernacle), several sculptures of saints and a console (stand) for reading the Apostle and the Gospel .
- An artificial grotto with the figure of the Virgin inside is built near the chapel.
