History
Under the Tang empire, in 619, the Nan (南 область) region and the Longyang county (隆 阳县) were allotted from Jiangjin County, and their control structures were located in the same place. In 712, Longyang County was renamed Nanchuan County (南川 县). Under the Northern Song Empire, in 1053 the region was merged with the county. In 1070, the Army of the Peace of the South was located here, and the county became subordinate to it.
Under the Yuan Empire, in 1285, the structures of the South Pacification Army were liquidated, and Nanchuan County became the Qijiang South Pacification Directorate. When Ming Yuzhen raised an anti-Mongol uprising, and in 1363 founded the Great Xia state, the Qijiang South Peace Office was transformed into Qijiang County.
In 1955, Nantong Mining District (南 桐 矿区) was established on adjacent lands of Qijiang County, Nanchuan County, and Tongzi County of Guizhou Province.
In 1958, Qijiang County came under the jurisdiction of Chongqing. In 1993, Nantong Mining District was transformed into the Wansheng (万盛 区) Chongqing District. By a resolution of the State Council of the PRC in 2011, the Wansheng District and Qijiang County were disbanded, and the Qijiang District was formed instead.
