Version Differences
In 2014, the developed game was transferred to a new game engine. The version on the old engine was called Legacy , and the new one was called Experimental . On October 6, 2016, the ability to launch the Legacy version was removed from the client side of the game.
The new version of the game is very different from Legacy , thanks in large part to the new version of the Unity engine.
Although most of the items that were in Legacy have been ported to the new version, many of them have been changed. There are new types of different equipment.
Also, in the new version, the construction system was changed - the system of rotting buildings was worked out and a stability indicator was added, which would not allow players to build huge "castles to heaven". In addition, double doors, hatches, stairs and railings are added.
On many servers, the card is procedurally generated. This means that the game does not have a single game card for all servers.
The drawing system, as in Legacy, introduced a high-end content element into the game. Basic craft items were available, but for more serious things, blueprints were required.
In July 2016, an experience system was introduced. I had to abandon the old drawing system, but the developers left the opportunity to return to the version with it. The game has become more like a survival simulator with elements of a classic RPG. The player gains experience and level, and can open new items for crafting [2] [3] [4] [5] .
In November 2016, the experience system was replaced with a component system. Players can now craft all things, but some items require details - components.
In 2017, a system of components plus drawings appeared.
On July 16, 2015, developers added the ability to buy things with colors on the Steam marketplace and in the game store. This purchase does not give any advantages, but only changes the appearance of the item in the game [6] .
In October 2016, Rust was added to the Steam workshop, which allowed players to create their own coloring for items.
In November 2016, it became possible to turn skins into fragments: wood, metal, fabric. For them you can buy containers, opening which, you will get a random skin.
In September 2017, the drawing system was returned to the game, however, the developers combined it with the component system. From now on, initially only basic objects are available for crafting, and for crafting more “advanced” ones, it is necessary to study them.
On February 9, 2018, Rust left early access.
- Early versions of Rust were sold in the amount of 150 thousand copies in two weeks [7] .
- In January 2014, the game became the best-selling on the Steam platform [8] . Five weeks after the release of the alpha version, the studio earned 40% of the amount received from the sales of Garry's Mod for nine years [9] . And by February, more than a million copies of the game had been sold [10] .
- In total, about 2 million copies were sold in 2014, but in 2015 it is already a million less [11] . Closer to 2016, the statistics of visits to the game has grown significantly. Facepunch provided data in the form of 15 thousand online players on average, and the peak values were around 29 thousand people.
