Sports Biography
Franciszek Buyak was born in 1896 in the city of Zakopane in the family of Joseph and Francis Karpal. In 1914, Franciszek graduated from the school of woodworking industry. From the age of 12, Buyak actively participated in various ski competitions. At first he played for the Łyżwistów club, and since 1913 he moved to SN PTT Zakopane. In 1914-1915, Franciszek was a member of the Polish legions , and from 1916 to 1917, Franciszek trained the soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army in ski training. In 1920, Buyak ended his service in the Polish army.
In 1924, Franciszek Buyak represented Poland at the first ever Olympic Winter Games in the French city of Chamonix . Like most other athletes, Buyak performed in several sports. In ski biathlon, Buyak was unable to complete the tackle, falling during a training ski jump. In cross-country skiing, the Polish athlete showed a result of 1: 42: 13.0, which allowed him to take only 27th place.
Buyak also performed at two world skiing championships, but the best result was only 14th in the 50 km race in 1927.
After finishing his sports career in different years, he was vice president of the SN PTT Zakopane club, the owner of a sports store, a judge at international sports competitions, and was a member of the organizing committee of two world skiing championships held in Zakopane (1939, 1962).
He died in 1975, was buried in the New Cemetery in Zakopane.
