Biography
Born into a peasant family in a small South Greek village in the Austrian Netherlands (then part of the Holy Roman Empire ).
In his youth, a talented young man attended a local school. His skills and talent allowed him to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in Ghent , and then go to Paris (1802-1808), where he worked with Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), a leading French neoclassical master and official painter of Napoleon I .
First exhibited his paintings at an exhibition in 1802 at the Ghent Salon. For the painting written in 1804, “The Court of Paris” was awarded the first prize of the Ghent Academy of Arts.
For some time he worked as an alma mater teacher. In 1808, he painted a portrait of Empress Josephine, after which he was given a cash allowance for studies in Rome for 4 years. He lived and studied for five years the skill of ancient artists. Together with other students of David took part in the decoration of the Roman Quirinal Palace .
In 1812 he returned to his homeland in Ghent, three years later he moved to Brussels to paint a portrait of Willem, Prince of Orange. He was a professor at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Brussels . He brought up a number of famous students, among them Eduard de Biief (1808-1881).
He created a number of paintings on religious, mythological and historical themes, portraits.
Enjoyed wide popularity. He painted portraits of many famous people of the Netherlands, including representatives of the royal family.
The artist's works are stored in the collections of the State Museum in Amsterdam , the Museum of Art in Cleveland (USA), etc.
