Biography

Anna was born on December 27, 1388 in New Forest , one of her father’s Irish estates. [1] She was the eldest of four children of Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, and Alienora Holland. Anne's father was a descendant of Lionel Antwerp , Duke of Clarence , the third son of King Edward III of England [2] .

In July 1398, her father died in Ireland. Since King Richard II did not have children, after him, Anna's father had pre-emptive rights, and after his death, Edmund Mortimer , Anna's brother. Mortimer’s possessions took custody of King Richard II [2] . But in the summer of 1399, King Richard II was overthrown by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke , who was crowned in October under the name of Henry IV. Edmund and Roger, the brothers of Anna, the new king placed under vigilant control in Windsor Castle , because he was afraid that they might be used in the fight against him. Anna and her younger sister Elizabeth were left in the care of their mother, Alienora Holland, who married a second time - for Edward Cherleton , who in 1401 inherited the titles of Baron Cherleton and Lord Powis. In this marriage, 2 daughters were born [3] [2] .

In 1405, Alienora Holland, Anna's mother, died. After that, her daughters were in need [2] .

In 1406, Richard Conisburg, the younger brother of Edward of Norwich , 2nd Duke of York, secretly married Anna. Papal permission for marriage was obtained on June 10, 1408. In this marriage two children were born [4] .

Anna died in September 1411, shortly after the birth of her son Richard . Her body was buried in a church in Kings Langley ( Hertfordshire ) [4] [5] .

Anna's husband, Richard, who in 1414 received the title of Earl of Cambridge, was executed in 1415 for organizing a conspiracy against King Henry V. Since Anna's brothers and sister did not leave children, the son of Anna Richard, who inherited the rights, was the heir to the Mortimer’s possessions and titles. on the crown. Later, he will unleash the war of the Scarlet and White Roses, as a result of which Anna's grandson, Edward IV , will ascend the English throne [6] [4] .
