The author of more than 200 scientific papers, he directed the preparation and publication of a series of scientific atlases of the nature of the polar countries. In the 1970s, he participated in the preparation of the two-volume Atlas of the Antarctic. The author of the book "Polar Deserts", Hydrometeoizdat, 1972.

Biography

He was born in 1918 in the city of Rechitsa of the Belarusian People’s Republic , later the Gomel Region of the Belorussian SSR , in a family of doctors (father is a surgeon, mother is a therapist).

In 1930, together with his parents, brother Boris and sisters, he moved to the city of Lugansk, and in 1934 to the city of Chudovo, Leningrad Region.

In 1940 he graduated from Leningrad State University , and in 1949 - graduate school at the Arctic Institute . [1] Since June 1940 he served in the Red Army. Member of World War II . In 1943, with the rank of Red Army, he was the platoon commander of the 257th separate combat engineer battalion of the 123rd Infantry Division of the Leningrad Front. The war ended with the rank of senior sergeant .

In 1947-1955, Korotkevich worked beyond the Arctic Circle — on the Novosibirsk Islands , Franz Josef Land , Novaya Zemlya , Severnaya Zemlya , Svalbard , the Kara Sea islands, and the Taimyr Peninsula . Since 1955, his scientific and organizational activities have been closely associated with the study of the nature of Antarctica. He participated in the First Complex Antarctic Expedition, and then (from 1962 to 1989 ) led the activities of Soviet Antarctic expeditions .

He was deputy director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the USSR State Committee for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring in Leningrad. He was a leading scientist at the AARI in the field of glaciology and geography of the polar countries, who made a great contribution to the study of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. For a long time he headed the Soviet Antarctic expedition, was the responsible editor of the SAE Newsletter (RAE). He was also vice-president of the Russian Geographical Society, was twice elected Vice-President of the International Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, was a member of the scientific councils of several institutes of St. Petersburg.

He lived in St. Petersburg, where he died on February 1, 1994 . He was buried at the Serafimovsky cemetery.

Rewards

  • By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 13, 1981, Korotkevich Yevgeny Sergeyevich was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Hammer and Sickle medal for great services in the research and development of the Antarctic.
  • He was awarded the Orders of Lenin (1981), World War 2 degree (1985), Red Star (1943), as well as other orders and medals.
  • Twice winner of the USSR State Prize.
  • Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR .
