Katoba , or katavba ( English Catawba ) - dead Native American language . One of two languages from the Katoba group, which was previously spoken by the Katoba people living in the state of South Carolina in the USA (the first of these two languages - Waukkon became extinct in the XVIII century ). The last native speaker died before 1960 . However, the last native Katoba speaker for whom this language was second was Cromwell Ashby Hawkins West , nicknamed Red Thunder Cloud ( Rus. Red Thunder Cloud ) (May 30, 1919 - January 8, 1996). West was of mixed African American and Native American descent. Katoba was not the first language for West; according to his claims, he learned this language from his mother’s parents. The tribe is now working to revive the Katoba language. The section on the revival of the language is also included in the national program for the protection of the katoba culture.
