Geographical position
The village is located in the central part of the Chegemsky district , on both banks of the Chegem river, in the valley of the Chegemsky gorge. The distance to the regional center of Chegem is 40 km, to the city of Nalchik - 45 km.
The area of the rural settlement is 66 km².
It borders with the lands of the settlement - Khushto-Syrt in the south, as well as with the lands of the State Forest Fund in the east and northeast.
The rural settlement is located in the transition from the foothill to the mountain zone of the republic. The relief is a mountain range surrounding the village from all sides. The average altitude within the village is 920 meters above sea level. The highest point of the rural settlement is Mount Urkhayuk (1 798 m), it is located west of the village. To the east of the village are tracts - Uzuntula and Jallak.
The hydrographic network is represented by the Chegem River and its small tributaries flowing from the ridges within the rural settlement. To the south of the village are several small waterfalls.
The climate is temperate. In spring and summer, it is mostly humid, in autumn and winter, dry weather prevails. The average daily temperature varies: in winter from +10 to −15 ° С, in summer from +20 to + 25 ° С. The average annual rainfall is about 550 mm.
History
The village was founded in 1886 by immigrants from the upper Chegem Gorge.
Until 1935, the Nizhne-Chegemsky Village Council was part of the Balkar District of the KBASSR. As a result of its disaggregation, the village council was included in the newly formed Chegemsky district, and the village was elected its regional center.
Prior to the forcible eviction of the Balkars to Central Asia in 1944 , the lower center of the Chegem Gorge was located in Lower Chegem [3] .
In 1957, the Balkars were rehabilitated by the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and returned to their places of former residence. Upon their return, the villagers began to engage mainly in animal husbandry and agriculture. Until the 1990s, a dairy plant for the production of sour-milk products worked.

Health
- Community Hospital
Serves the inhabitants of Lower Chegem, as well as the villages of Khushto-Syrt and Upper Chegem . In 2006, due to a lack of medical personnel, it was decided to close the hospital. However, the efforts of the elders of the village managed to save the medical facility. A year later, the hospital was awarded an honorary diploma of the Ministry of Health of the CBD, in 2008 and 2009 with honorary diplomas of the district health department [14] . Today, the hospital has an outpatient clinic and a dental office. There are opportunities for outreach services to the population.
Culture
- House of Culture. With him there are dance clubs and a library.
Islam
By religion, the inhabitants of Lower Chegem are Sunni Muslims . There is one mosque in the village.
Economics
The main income to the population of the village comes from agriculture and tourism. The proximity of the Chegem waterfalls and the upper Chegem Gorge allows the villagers to develop tourism.
In agriculture, breeding of domestic animals, in particular sheep and sheep, is developed. Warm, humid and temperate climate gives irrigated alpine arable lands the opportunity to annually collect rich crops of corn, potatoes and cabbage. There are gardens of wild plums, pears, mulberries and viburnum.

- Kuliev Kaysyn Shuvaevich is a famous Balkarian poet. In school years he lived in the village and studied at Nizhnechegemsky secondary school.
- Akkizov Yakub Alievich - artist, member of the Union of Artists of the USSR , Honored Artist of the KBR.
- Mustafayev Magomet Shabazovich - surgeon, MD, Honored Doctor of Russia and the CBD. Laureate of the All-Russian contest "Best Doctor of the Year 2014".
