In the artistic gymnastics competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics, the participating countries were allowed to have no more than three athletes in each final in all-round events and no more than two in each final in projectiles. This controversial decision made it impossible for many athletes from strong teams to take part in the finals. In addition, for the first time, the number of countries that were allowed to put up full teams of six for team competitions was limited to 12; the decision on which countries would fall into this dozen was made following the results of the previous world championship .
