Formation
The regiment was formed at the end of April 1861 in Augusta, Georgia. He was immediately sent to Portsmouth, Virginia, where regiment officers were selected on May 8. The first commander was Colonel Ambrose Wright , Lt. Col. James Reid, Major Arthur Lee. 3rd Georgian became the first regiment to leave Georgia.
Battle Path
On May 19-20, the regiment was transferred to Suffolk , where a federal raid was expected. On August 5, Company I was withdrawn from the regiment and turned into the Blodgett's Battery of Georgia Light Artillery . On August 28, Colonel Wright with four companies was sent to the island of Hatteras, but on the way he learned that the island was occupied by the enemy, so he occupied Roanoke Island to cover the Portsmouth area. On the same days, a new company I joined the regiment. In September, the remaining companies joined the regiment, and Camp Georgia camp was founded on the western shore of Roanoke Island.
On September 27, Captain Isaac Vincent died of the disease.
From October 4 to 7, the regiment fought with the federal detachment at Chikimakoniko, dropping him from his position and capturing several prisoners and a lot of military equipment. During these battles, the regiment lost one man. In December, the regiment was returned to Portsmouth, and Camp Blanchard camp was built on the outskirts of the city at the shipyards. Later, on January 1, the camp was moved a mile up the river. On February 12, it became known that the federal detachment had taken up positions at South Mills; The regiment arrived in Elizabeth City. On April 12, at the South Miles position, the regiment was attacked by the federal brigade of Jesse Renault. The regiment had to retreat, but the northerners did not pursue them and left the battlefield themselves. In the Battle of South Miles, the regiment lost 5 people dead, 12 wounded and 3 missing out of 350 people involved in the battle.
