He gained worldwide recognition as the creator of awning and membrane structures, which he used in his structures.

Biography
Born May 31, 1925 in the city of Sigmar (now Chemnitz region, Germany) in the family of a sculptor [6] .
In 1931-1943 he studied at the school of Zelendorf ( Berlin ) as a bricklayer [7] .
Before the draft in the Luftwaffe, he studied architecture in Berlin . At the end of World War II, he fought as a fighter pilot.
He was interned in a French prison camp. During the construction of this camp, he managed to prove himself as a design engineer by proposing several building projects from lightweight structures that were implemented (in particular, shelter tents).
Freed, Fry Otto entered the Berlin Technical University , which he graduated in 1950 with a diploma in architecture. Then he trained for a short time in the USA , where he met with architects such as Erich Mendelssohn , Ludwig Mies van der Rohe , Richard Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright .
Otto began his architectural activities in Germany in 1952, establishing his own architectural bureau in Zehlendorf. In 1954, he received his doctorate for structures made of suspended (tensioned) structures.
In 1964, Otto founded the Institute of Lightweight Structures of the University of Stuttgart and headed it as a professor until his retirement. In retirement, he worked actively as an architect, engineer and consultant.
He died on March 9, 2015 .
