Dynasty History
The fact that such a dynasty existed in Abydos was first suggested by Detlef Franke in 1988 [2] . In 1997, Egyptologist Kim Richolt examined in detail the data on the dynasty that existed in parallel with the XV (Hyksos) and XVI (Theban) dynasties. He attributed several pharaohs to this dynasty [3] .
His findings were confirmed in January 2014, when archaeologists led by Joseph Wegner in Abydos discovered a tomb of a previously unknown pharaoh named Senebkai , built around 1650 BC. e. [1] [4] [5]
The dynasty was probably of local origin, and its rulers were independent of the Hyksos . Judging by the fact that the tomb of Senebkaya is small, the dynasty had limited resources [5] . The area subject to the dynasty was located between the possessions of the pharaohs XV (Hyksos) and XVI / XVII (Theban) dynasties.
The royal necropolis is located in the southern part of Abydos - in an area called Mount Anubis. Nearby are the graves of the pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom , including Senusert III ( XII dynasty ) and Sebekhotep I ( XIII dynasty ) [1] .
According to archaeologists, there is evidence of the existence of 16 royal tombs, dating from about 1650-1600 BC. e. Senebkai was probably one of the first pharaohs of the dynasty. His name may be present in the damaged part of the Tsarist Turin list , in which there are two pharaohs with the name Waucer ... ra, located at the top of the list of pharaohs whose names are lost [1] .
