Background
After the unsuccessful reconstruction of the Stad du Rey stadium in 2002, the idea of building a new stadium in Nice arose. The immediate reason for starting the construction of the stadium was the approval of France as the venue for the 2016 European Football Championship [1] . As a result of an international competition, the construction of the stadium was entrusted to Wilmotte & Associés. The architect of the project was Jean-Michel Wilmotte .
Features
The stadium is located in the Var river valley, 12 kilometers from the center of Nice. It is located in a seismically dangerous zone, and its construction became possible due to the supporting structure of wood and metal with beam geometry. Alliance Riviera is equipped with transparent photovoltaic cladding panels that provide energy for 29 night events and 5 large-scale concerts a year. Also, the arena is equipped with a rainwater collection system and a geothermal cooling and heating system [1] .
The construction of the arena has become part of a comprehensive development plan for the surrounding area. Near the stadium there is a complex of service industry enterprises: shops, restaurant offices. A new freeway and tram line have been brought to the “Alliance Riviera” [2] .
Usage
Alliance Riviera is the home arena for Nice Football Club. The first football match took place on September 22, 2013, when “Nice” took “ Valenciennes ” [3] as part of the French championship . On June 1, 2014, a friendly match between the national teams of France and Paraguay is planned at the stadium [4] .
Also in the 2013/2014 season, the stadium will hold 3 matches of the Tulon rugby club. On October 5, 2013 and May 3, 2014, the club receives rivals in the French championship [5] , and on January 11, 2014 the team played here with Cardiff Blues as part of the Heineken Cup group tournament [6] .
The stadium is suitable for concerts [2] . During the concert, the capacity of the stadium (despite the fact that part of the audience will be placed on the field) can be more than 44 thousand people [7] .
In 2014, the National Sports Museum opened in the Alliance Riviera building. The museum’s collection has been transported from Paris and comprises over 100,000 objects and documents, which will make it one of the most extensive in the world. The collection will also feature exhibits of the 16th century [1] .
The stadium hosted 4 matches of the European Football Championship 2016 , including the 1/8 final game, in which the Icelandic team sensationally defeated the England team (2: 1).
