During World War I, Zrinyi operated in the Adriatic Sea . He served in the 2nd battleship division of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. During May 1915, it fired at the key Italian seaport of Ancona . However, control by the Allied fleet of the Otranto Strait blocked the exit of the Austro-Hungarian Navy in the Adriatic and the command had to abandon strategic goals. However, the presence of Zrigny and other battleships distracted the great forces of the Allied fleets. By the end of 1918, Zrinyi was prepared for the transfer to the fleet of the newly formed State of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (future Yugoslavia), however, on November 10, 1918, the Yugoslav sailors handed over the ship to the Americans. Following the transfer to the United States Navy, Zrinyi was briefly incorporated into the United States Navy. Soon the ship was handed over to Italy, where it was scrapped.
