Biography

Sergei Maksyutov was born on April 10, 1925 in the city of Kerensk (now the village of Vadinsk in the Vadinsky district of the Penza region ). After finishing seven classes of the school he worked on a collective farm . In 1943, Maksyutov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since December of the same year - on the fronts of World War II [1] .

By February 1945, Red Army soldier Sergei Maksyutov was a pontoon of the 18th separate motorized pontoon-bridge battalion of the 3rd pontoon-bridge brigade of the 13th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On February 3, 1945, Maksyutov was in combat guard of the bridge over the Oder in the vicinity of the city of Brzeg . Having discovered that the enemy tried to launch landmines in inflatable boats to blow up the bridge, he threw himself into the water and detained them, while undermining himself. He was buried on the banks of the Oder north of Brzeg [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time", Red Army soldier Sergei Maksyutov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .

Streets in Vadinsk [1] and Naberezhnye Chelny are named after Maksyutov.
