About the Single
Like the previous single from the X&Y album, “ Talk ” (the title track of which is a kind of tribute to the German band Kraftwerk ), “The Hardest Part” refers the listener to the work of the American band REM [1] [2] According to the band, the motive “The Hardest” Part ”was inspired by the 1991 song“ Losing My Religion ” [3] [4] . The song was removed from the track list of the preliminary version of the X&Y album sent to the label [3] , but was nevertheless included in its final version [5] [6] .
Side “B” is occupied by the song “How You See the World”, performed live at Earls Court [3] .
A live version of The Hardest Part was released on the 2009 live album LeftRightLeftRightLeft [7] .
Music video
The video for “The Hardest Part” was shot March 3, 2006 in St. Petersburg , Florida by director Mary Wigmore. [8] The clip uses frames from the Attitudes talk show , which appeared on the Lifetime channel in 1985-1991. The band members are “added” to the original video through digital technologies, which gives the impression that the group is playing directly on the show [9] . Also in the frame appears Linda Dano , who played in the American soap opera " Another World " [9] . Stage dancers are 84-year-old Barbara Mosley and 25-year-old Gene Spencer. Their performance was recorded in 1990.
